Drastic changes in the Auto Industry

The new big thing in the auto industry is the fact that “Self-driving cars are no longer a futuristic idea.” Companies like Mercedes, BMW, and Tesla have already released, or are soon to release, self-driving features that give the car some ability to drive itself. While this technology wouldn’t be ready to replace human drivers entirely for quite a while, it is indeed music to budding engineers in the technology field who are able to make a difference to the lives of ordinary people.
One of the biggest benefits of this self-driven car revolution, will be the lowering of accidental deaths and increased safety on the road. With self-driven cars, India would surely become a more disciplined place to drive in without people driving over footpaths, changing lines without indication and cutting across or overtaking in the wrong manner. All this will lower the accidental deaths, increase road safety and reduce the tension stress and blood pressure levels while driving. However, the cost of and regulation clearance of this revolution are still an issue.
All said and done, self-driving cars have a bright future considering the number of companies wanting to supply it and the great hype in the consumer market. Soon, the next generation would wonder why it was necessary to attain a driving licence at the age of 18!
The other change one can forecast is the change in car ownership with cars being used based on the special needs. The consumer of today uses the car as an all-purpose vehicle ranging from going on the holiday to going to office. Also, today the average consumer’s car utilisation level is low as he parks the car in the office. Tomorrow, he will use car sharing like Uber to go to office, send kids to school and hire a big family car like an SUV for a family holiday. This will lead to more sales of specialised vehicles customised to needs and routines of the consumers. With more than 40 million monthly active users around the world of Uber, we can see this trend taking shape.
Lastly, one can also find the increased demand of electric cars. Tesla roadster, the electric car sold by tesla motors first in 2008 has sold almost 125,000 electric cars till date. The Tesla Model 3 was unveiled on March 31, 2016 got more than 325,000 reservations during the first week of bookings. Other Companies who have launched their electric versions are Nissan, BMW, Hyundai and Volkswagen.
These trends above show how the people today have options to move from one place to another and the speed with which the industry is changing. There may be a time that cars on the road today will be passé and this generation would be proud owners of the then  “Antique cars” !
